Reviews Berlin Schonefeld Airport

How can this be a capital city's airport?? It's smaller and looks more awful than provincial airports in Africa. There are endless queues for everything, all food is really expensive (even in airport standards), there's nowhere to sit...and I could go on. Moreover, in my previous visit to this airport, my flight and many other flights were canceled because of the totally incompetent management of this airport. And the staff didn't even know how to let us go out of the transit zone. The whole crowd was forced to wait in a tiny corridor like animals. This is the last time I flew from this sh*thole, next time I'll fly from Prague, no matter the price.

Seemingly random airport layout with nowhere to view the apron well. Had to stand in line for 45 minutes to get to the gate because each gate has individual passport control stations. Waiting area at the gate was barely big enough for the 200 or so passengers travelling on my flight. WiFi didn't work properly on either or my devices. Security was very good though. Passed through very quickly and easily.

Poor airport... I kept asking myself if this airport is in Europe and in Germany. Not only food and retail services are few, but toilet maintenance and cleaning is just a complete joke.
The only good news about this airport is customs/security which is fast and professional.
Overall: Very disappointed with SXF airport... sorry.

The airport is not small at all, there are several terminals but the connection to get there at late night is horrible, there is only a nachtbus N/ that doesn't cover many parts of the city.
The security checks were messy and forced to move from one building to another due to the massive number of people. The facilities are limited and overcrowded.

Schonefeld is an old airport waiting for the new one (on the other side of the runway)to open, which should have been years ago and won't be in the foreseeable future. There is now a new terminal D dedicated to arrivals (a bit farther than the D for departures), to which the passengers are bussed. The C terminal is departure for pax with hand luggage only, and is very practical.

Old airport, long lines. Most of the airlines are low cost airlines. Transportation is resonable, but a weebit far from the city center.

Not enough seats available while waiting. Might have been because we had our flight during rush-hour, but having to sit on the ground for nearly an hour isn't very comfortable nor really acceptable from any modern airport.

Enormous waiting time to security check - nearly 1:30 hrs in an endless line with only 4 screening points operating. Few seats, only 1 cafe in a super-tiny terminal. Recalls memories of East Berlin!

had to wait overnight for another flight, the terminals offered very little space to sit comfortably or sleep in the generally available area, airside was closed until 4am, but having my flight at 8.20, I had to wait until 6.20 to go to security check. it was cold in the terminal halls, except top floor of terminal A. wish they open BER soon :)

Simply terrible. This is an outdated relic from the communist period. The airport has the capacity equivalent to a farmers road, therefore its crowded in its small hallways. The lack of windows and small lengthy hallways make the airport a claustrophobic unhappy place to be. I had to take a connecting flight but there was NO option to stay airside i had to go trough a crowded security again. Almost missed my flight due to this shithole. Would gladly pay more for a decent airport...

Appalling airport. Difficult to get to, long queues at security and passports, people sitting on the floor in corridors as not enough seating, insufficient food outlets, no water fountains, overheated and stuffy, the list is endless
Avoid like the plague!

Schonefeld airport is easy to access and the security check even though it's always crowded it's pretty fast. Apart from that, the airport is pretty bad, small waiting area available on most of the gates and poor facilities.

It is quite old airport, you can just feel it. Even though did not have any problems, only had to wait in queue for security. Did not really explore it, but overall was great! Easy to reach by train or bus.

The arrival wasn't at the big terminal, I arrived at the old one, it's ugly. A lot of people seemed to be angry for no reason, they work like if they were forced to do it, bad experience sadly..

Schonefeld is not a great airport and its age and small size emphasise this. Access to the airport and the Viewing deck are the only really good things about this airport.
Arriving I dropped my bag and went through to security. These were relatively quick and flawless, but can easily get congested at peak times. Airside there is very little seating other than by the gates which can only be accessed with ID and boarding pass. At all times the airport appears congested. There are a good number of shops and restaurants.
I look forward to Brandenburg Airport opening eventually

A quite small airport for a large capital like Berlin, especially it's much to aged and there's nothing modern. The WiFi is very good and fast but you have to wait a very long time for check-in as well as for the security check! All in all we can conclude, that it's better, when the new airport Berlin-Brandenburg will open soon.

Terrible airport experience - the check-in staff was friendly and the airport was easily reached, however the terminal was horrendously overcrowded, was unclean, and power points were few and far between and seemingly low-powered. It will be a relief when Brandenburg opens.

As a frequent flyer I can in no ways recommend SXF. Completely lack of comfort, food, drinks, seats or atmosphere. The way through the old terminal to the exit is extremely long - and it even feels like they wanna slow down the passangers on purpose as every door or gate you have to pass on your way is very narrow.

Small and very old airport, only positive is the relatively fast connection to Berlin via S-Bahn trains. But all other things are bad: slow security, dirty waiting areas, uncomfortable seating. Not enough shops and runway is far away from terminals. Avoid this airport!

Airport is untidy filthy dirty and very poor facility wise. Rubbish in bins were overflowing and it all closes way too early so if your flight is late and delayed you can be assured of hanging around with nothing to do.
`even the seating facilities were a joke.
Free wifi for an hour and thats it.
Overall a terrible experience.

Old, without fast food or snackbar, very bad places where to sleep over the night etc. I completely didn't like it.. Also the runway is the new Brandenburg Airport, so from the sit in the plane to the take-off it takes around 20 minutes...boring..

This place is terrible. Poor food. Bad Wifi. Shocking service. Dreadful signage. Avoid avoid avoid. There is nowhere comfortable to sit. The restaurants are lame and the place is dirty. I would strongly suggest using the newer airport to the north if possible.

This airport does exactly what it's supposed to do. A place to get your boarding pass, deliver your luggage, go through security and offer a roof above your head while waiting to board your aircraft. Expect nothing more. Expect no improvements either: the place is waiting to be closed down and be replaced by Berlin Brandenburg Airport, if that ever happens...
Furthermore, it is possible to move between the four terminals while behind security control, which may improve the amount of available seats and shops a bit: most of the venues are horribly overpriced, though. Accessibility of the airport seems to be its biggest selling point, with a vast amount of buses and trains stopping at or near this airport.

This place is old, dirty, smelly and just simply terrible. It looks like there is a new airport being built adjacent to the old place. Hope this is correct - I found it when trying to return my rental car. there was no lounge and I had to wait in a dank corridor for my flight.

Every Easyjet Airport is faster. The security rows are extremly slow. You have to calculate 1 Hour before departure for securtity. And then you dont have time for a toilet stop! Its the old DDR Interflight Airport which has some refurbishings....

The most disgusting airport I have ever been to. If you fly easyjet expect at least half an hour up to an hour waiting in line for the security check. The building is very ugly, cold war like and everything is narrow, the air sticky. Since there is a Burger King and a pub in the waiting are at the gates, it smells like french fries not only in the hallways, but also you might find your fellow passenger smelling like his last dish. The gates are too small, if you don't manage to be there in time you will have to stand.
In contrast to the poor surroundings I found the personell to be very friendly.

Direct connection only once an hour from Potsdam, I enarly missed my flight again! Station is quite far from the terminal. The signage inside is poor, relying on vague symbols rather than words in German or English. There is little catering for pescetarians who are allergic to mushrooms. Bottled water is expensive. The security area is cramped. There is no free wifi, not even a 30 minute free trial. I had to queue for about 25 minutes to get into the country as I was flying from outside of Schengen. If you can fly into/out of Tegel, do that instead. I can only see things getting even worse when Brandenburg Airport opens (if it ever does). In conclusion, favourite city, least favourite airport!

Old, but easy in directions/bording and service. Though the business lounge is very average. Just a comfort place with WI-FI to seat and drink smth.
International flight out of EU which require passport control - there are created small areas without toilets after passport control where just to seat and wait.

The journey to Berlin Schonefeld Airport was very good. We took the S-Bahn from Central Berlin to the airport.
We arrived 3 hours before departure, so more than enough time. But, what became immediately clear was that the facilities were dated even before getting past check-in. The architecture looked Cold War era. When we arrived at Check-in and had put our bags through security screening, we then went to check-in our hold luggage. Unfortunately, the counters at check-in in Terminal A at Schonefeld were not like systems used by similar low-cost carriers at other airports, where several counters are used for the all flights of that airline at once. We had a counter and a Milan flight was currently using it. It wasn't for another hour that it finally opened.
At security it was a similar problem of cold war infrastructure. It took a further 10-15 minutes to get through to airside departures. When I got air side what was obvious to me was the lack of seating in the food and retail area, with people sitting against the walls on either side waiting to be allowed to go their respective departure lounge.
I went to get food for breakfast, but everywhere was busy. Then with over an hour before the gate was scheduled to close, I was requested to go to Gate 62 for boarding. When I got there, I found that I had to show my passport, which was unusual compared to other airports I have used. I then waited in this departure lounge for FR1639 to East Midlands for at least 30 minutes. This for me was the weirdest and worst airport experience ever.
In the future, if I have to travel to Berlin, I will have to hope that the new Berlin Brandenburg Airport will have opened by then.

Arriving at Schonefeld was good. After disembarkation and entering the terminal, we walked quite far to reach immigration and baggage reclaim. This due in part because my flight used the new low cost section of the airport. Immigration took longer than I expected from an European airport. Once I had reached baggage reclaim, it was quick to start and I quickly received my bag.
Travelling from the airport, you can take a taxi or public transport. I took the S-Bahn to Central Berlin from the nearby dedicated Schonefeld station. The station is not next to the airport and a walk of a couple of minutes is required between the two.
I would recommend not arriving in the evening as services do become less frequent. As well as that, if you are not used to using the rail network in Berlin, It is quite difficult to navigate compared to the London Underground and the ticketing system is not easy either. Unfortunately there was no one there to help us with ticketing, as it is automated.
The arrival in to Schonefeld was ok.

Berlin is my favourite city. Schoenefeld is my least favourite airport. Firstly, long walk from S-Bahn station to terminal. The airport layout is super confusing, it's so easy to end up at the easyjet check-in desks when actually you're looking for terminal a security upstairs because you already saved to the time (supposedly!) checking in online! Nowhere to sit... I had a Burger King, there were no proper seats and the fries were cold. I was herded around a tiny gate area like cattle, squeezed in with equally disgruntled strangers. The staff were cold mannered, and the sirport front doors are so poorly designed that there isn't room for people going both in and out. Hoping for better things from Berlin Brandenburg, if it ever opens!

The worst airport that I ever been. I understand that in big city getting to the airport can be hard but everytime after long trip I want to sit down before flight and rest, eat or other do things. On the SXF, there isn't any seats and any good place to eat. Only what I wanted is get on the plane and leave.

The ticket machines on the nearby train station only accept cash an Eurocard so I had to use the ticket office. Which offered good service. Had to deboard using a shuttle bus even though the terminal was only 30 meters away. Strange. Have walk on the tarmac for longer at other airports.

Better transport than to Tegel Airport, much less busy airport than Tegel meaning flights almost all on time. From the front gates there is nice view over parts of the apron. Be aware of very late posting of gate numbers, it appears shortly before the gate actually closes.
