Reviews Shanghai Pudong International Airport

One of the best airports in the world connected to the city by Maglev line, a metro line, lots of coach lines and a highway. The architecture is stunning, the service is very good. You can find plenty of restaurants and cafes between the two terminals and inside each of them.

The checkin crew were friendly, according to our request they printed a new boarding pass so we could sit on a window seat next to each other. There was a drinking water dispenser at the gate as well.

The airport is nice with a lot of shops for good prices! If you are flying on Shanghai Airlines or that you are going to Hong Kong,Japan and Korea. Your gate will certainly be on a bus gate (209,210)

Huge and well organized. One of the best airports I've visited. Lots of shops in all areas, travelators, clean toilets at hand anywhere you go. Maglev train is a must when you visit Shanghai.

The wifi is a bit slow, although in China you can rarely get fast wifi. There's a good range of shops and restaurants in Terminal 2, lots of choice. It's a relaxing place to prepare for a long flight. The queues at immigration and customs seemed to move quickly, and our bags were available almost as soon as we arrived at the carousel.

Getting to the airport is complicated in the morning because the subway starts working at 6am.
Check-in was pretty long because they are mixing all KA/CX flights.
Security check and immigration was super long (as usual)

Great! We had such a long taxi and a long time in the bus. We disembarked at some gate with a tube and everything but everything was dark and the bus was waiting for us next to the gate entrance.

The duty free are is closed for the night. I've missed to buy some souvenirs that I've planned to. The security check doesn't meet any european/US standards. Limited space and the officers are rather focused on improving the flow than on the detailed inspection.
Once again at PVG: although the boarding was on time, we had to wait for the take off over 30minutes.

Learned my lesson about the free wifi from last time. Traffic was bad again driving in from the port to the airport PVG.
Security is no fun, but it is China.
No free liquor in the lounge. Food okay, not much choice.

Going through Shanghai on transit can be quite disturbing. Immigration and customs are very efficient, no problem. But when you are on transit between an international flight and a domestic one, the system for re-registering your luggage and then for finding your way to the domestic departures, is not very easy, the signs and indications are not very clear, and the whole process seems to be quite cumbersome.
In addition, I was never able to connect to the free WiFi at the airport (never get a code via SMS despite entering my phone number).

Had to get finger printed. Easier if you don't have fingers. Picture taken for immigration. High security now in China. Pick up spy program when scanned passport to get free wifi. Drain my battery quickly. Took me a few days to guess what was happening to cell phone. Had to remove battery to get rid of spy ware.

Beware the private car services. The drivers will atempt to scam you by telling you it's mandatory to tip the driver 100 yuan (on top of the $90 both ways paid for going to and from the airport) because they can speak English. This is a lie. They'll even try to back this claim up by producing a piece of paper that looks like the receipt you will need to sign when paying for the service.

Maglev is great. If taking regular metro (green line) all the way to the airport take care to change trains and allow plenty of time.
Average experience, but nothing to be worried about.
There is wi-fi on some places, better then nowhere.

Security controls are illogical and extremely restrictive.
For example, you can arrive in Shanghai with a used external battery or lighter in your luggage (which will have passed through security at the departure airport without any problem) but you will have to say goodbye because they will be confiscated at the checkpoint when you leave China because of the drastic Chinese regulations (even checked luggage goes through the X-ray and you can be called to open your suitcase to find the prohibited object), while a water bottle opened in a backpack will not trigger any concern.

Normal airport.
Customs not letting you out with lighter.
Almoat no seats for waiting at the gate. For a plane of 250-300 people a small place with something like 60 seats.
Apart from this - no shops almost and good mediocre duty free.

The airport itself is ok, but some of their procedures are just super inefficient. There is a dedicated line for people in transit. That probably takes 5 mins per person, which means than 10-15 person in front of you can take almost an hour to proces. Then there is the ATC. I have never seen such inefficient handling of traffic.

Shanghai Pudong Airport is an average in China, but compared to the other airport of the city in Honqiao it is poor. The terminal facilities both at the domestic and at the international terminal are too poor for China's richest city. It is impossible to connect to the wi-fi, and if one succeeded will realize that it Is actually slower than the Edge service from China mobile. The crowd management at Hongqiao works much better, it often takes 30-60 minutes at PVG to get a taxi. Maglev takes you closer to the city, but when you arrive there, you need to negotiate with the taxi mafia...beware of the scams, better take a taxi from the airport.

I live in Shanghai and after more than 30 flights from/to Pudong I have to say it?s the worst airport in the world! Complete disaster in terms of queueing to everything for a long time. Why Beijing airport can do so well and Pudong can?t?

The Air China transfer process in PVG is differ from the others. All the tranfer passengers will be gathered in one group since leaving the aircarft. From that moment, inculding ticketing, quarantine, checking in at the transfer counter, you need to wait until all the group of transfer passengers finish their process, then can proceed to the next step. The whole process might took more than 1 hour.

Lounge has been extremely crowded every time i've been to this airport.
Airport Terminal offers very few stores, so they are all very hot and crowded.
All gate announcements are made over all loud speakers, very loud and unnecessary.
Man with bull-horn was walking around making flight announcements.

I live in Shanghai and I hate Pudong Airport. Long queues to security, passport check etc. For most domestic and continental flights (few times also for an intercontinental flight too, BA from London) they use buses to move you to/from the plane which sometimes means even 20 minutes standing in a crowded bus! Services are poor, also lounges. Flights are often delayed from/to this airport.

Denied entry to the lounge because we were travelling with my 16 year old daughter. Or I could have paid 250RMB to get her in - I've been to the lounge before and the bowl of instant noodles on offer definitely is not worth 250RMB. Shame on you.
We were departing from Terminal 1. As the older terminal there are far fewer food and retail services - as compared Terminal 2.
Coupled with the lounge rejection flying out of T1 in Shanghai was not a pleasant experience when compared to all of the other times when we traveled out of T2.
